Description

Bananas Foster carries a fascinating history rooted in New Orleans' vibrant culinary culture. In 1951, Chef Paul Blangé at Brennan's restaurant in New Orleans, together with Owen Brennan, created this sumptuous dessert to showcase the city's abundant banana trade. Inspired by the Caribbean influence in the region, they combined ripe bananas, butter, brown sugar, and rum to create a sizzling, flambéed spectacle that quickly became a beloved classic. The finished Bananas Foster is served with a scoop of premium vanilla ice cream, creating a luscious contrast between warm, caramelized goodness and the cool creaminess of the ice cream. Optional garnishes like chopped walnuts or pecans and a dollop of whipped cream enhance the dessert with delightful texture and visual appeal.

At The Spice and Tea Shoppe, we take pride in offering premium ingredients, including Madagascar Vanilla Extract, Saigon Cinnamon, and aromatic spices, elevating this dessert to a true masterpiece. This easy-to-follow recipe will impress your guests and satisfy your sweet cravings with its warm, caramelized goodness.

Ingredients:

4 ripe bananas, peeled and sliced
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup dark rum (preferably spiced rum)
1/4 cup banana liqueur optional but amazing!
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Optional Garnish:
Chopped walnuts or pecans
Whipped cream

Directions:

In a large skillet or sauté pan, melt the butter over medium heat.

Stir in the brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg, and cook until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is bubbly.

Carefully add the sliced bananas to the skillet, and gently toss them in the buttery sugar mixture. Cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring gently, until the bananas are coated and slightly softened.

Remove the pan from the heat, and carefully add the rum and banana liqueur. Caution: The alcohol may cause the sauce to briefly flame up, so keep a safe distance and use caution.

Return the pan to the heat, and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until the alcohol cooks off, and the sauce thickens slightly.

To serve, place the warm Bananas Foster into serving bowls or plates.

Add a scoop of high quality vanilla bean ice cream.

Optional: Garnish with chopped walnuts or pecans and a dollop of whipped cream for added texture and indulgence.

Enjoy immediately while the Bananas Foster is still warm and the ice cream is melty.
