Description
The nutmeg tree was introduced to Grenada in the middle 1800s by local planters returning from Indonesia to help expand cocoa production but has far surpassed cocoa in importance on the island. Today nutmeg from Grenada is known as "Black Gold" and Grenada is responsible for nearly 20 percent of the worlds nutmeg production on a tiny island roughly twice the size of California's Catalina Island. Whole nutmeg is the seed inside the fruit of the nutmeg tree and is similar to the stone of many fruit we are familiar with but with a truly unique flavor which makes it quite special. Whole Nutmeg has a warm, slightly sweet flavor that is released when ground or grated. Added to puddings, muffins, apple pie and other sweet dishes and used in eggnog and spiced wine for a festive touch as well as savory dishes such as pasta, cream sauces, onion dishes, steamed spinach and braised vegetables.
