What are Mulling Spices?

Transport yourself to cozy winter nights and festive gatherings with our aromatic Mulling Spices. For centuries, Mulling Spices have been used to flavor hot-spiced cider and mulled wine. Our traditional European blend includes cinnamon, clove, cardamom and allspice. The taste is a delightful balance of sweet and spicy, while the aroma fills the air with comforting notes of holiday magic.

Suggested Uses:

Mulled Apple Cider

3 Tbsp. of our Mulling Spices tied in cheesecloth or placed in muslin bag
1 cup maple syrup or 1 cup dark brown sugar
2 quarts (1/2 gallon) unfiltered apple cider (not juice)
Juice from ½ Lemon
1 cup dark rum (optional)


Pour apple cider into a large saucepan, add maple syrup or brown sugar and stir until dissolved, then add Mulling Spices and bring almost to a boil. Add lemon juice.

Reduce the heat to its lowest setting and simmer for 30 minutes, or alternatively you may transfer hot cider to crock pot and simmer on low through the day. If adding rum do so at very end or simply add ½ ounce to cup before ladling in hot cider for those who prefer a bit of kick in their drink.

Mulled German Wine

3 Tbsp. of our Mulling Spices tied in cheesecloth or placed in muslin bag
1 medium lemon sliced
1 medium orange sliced
1 medium red apple sliced into rings
1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
1 1/4 cups water
2 (750-milliliter) bottles dry red wine
1 cup brandy
Cinnamon sticks for garnish


Place the Mulling Spices bundle in the saucepan, add the sugar and water and place the pan over med-high heat bringing to a simmer stirring to dissolve the sugar. Reduce the heat to low and continue to simmer, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is reduced by about one-third, about 20 minutes.

Add the red wine and brandy, sliced lemon, orange and apple, stir to combine, and bring just to a simmer (don’t let it boil). Remove from the heat and remove and discard the spice bundle, lemon slices and orange slices before serving but leave apple for a beautiful presentation. Ladle into cups and garnish with cinnamon sticks. Alternately the recipe can be prepared in a crock pot set to low and enjoyed throughout the day.

    Over Christmas my son and I wanted mulled wine. We used these mulling spices and sweet red wine in a crockpot. The heat reduced the alcohol content, making the mulled wine deliciously drinkable.

    I made some mulled wine with this mix and took it to a Danish coworker's house, and he was trying to get 'the recipe' for it out of me because it turned out so well!
